Power and Analytics

I recently discovered the site called Analytic Cycling within it, there are various OCD inducing calculators to help you determine what your figures need to be to achieve certain goals. For example, I was able to find out what my power output needs to be to achieve a certain speed depending on various ‘realistic’ assumption around air drag and the like. Quite useful actually. Additionally, I was able to determine how much weight I needed to lose to affect my climbing speed. Answer = no more Indian take out. Anyway, to give you a good idea of what power outputs can be, this wikipedia... [Read the full story]

The British winter isn’t easy to bike through. It’s rather wet and cold. Sure, we don’t have it as bad as the Canadians, but it’s because of the constant wetness we have on the roads here that it can sometimes feel worse. For this reason, we cyclists use all sorts of waterproof gear. Overshoes are a must just to keep your toes from falling off, but on a rainy day or even puddle-filled day, that can sometimes not be enough. The constant splashing, even with mudguards, can leave you with soaked and cold feet. Cue in the need for a waterproof sock as the last layer of defense... [Read the full story]

Polar ProTrainer 5 Software Review (Polar RS800CX PTE Review Part II)

December 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In my recent review of the Polar RS800CX PTE, I covered the capabilities of the PTE as a supplement to a coach-created cycle training program. What allows you to create the programs that a coach gives you (if you use heart rate zones) is the Polar ProTrainer 5 software that comes with the RS800CX PTE (the software comes with the RS400 and above as well, but you may need to buy the infra-red USB stick to interface with the monitor+computer). The Polar ProTrainer 5 software (PPT5) CD comes with the RS800cx packaging, but you can download it from Polar’s website if you need to. The software keeps... [Read the full story]

PyrActif Pyrenees Cycling Holiday Review

December 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Sometimes you decide at the last minute to take one of those holidays that you wonder why you put off for so long… For me, it was cycling through the French Pyrenees as part of an organized group. I had heard of these brilliant trips people took to the Pyrenees and other Tour de France mountains, but always thought that it would be too difficult to put together and schedule. Luckily a series of events early this summer opened up my availability and increased my motivation to take some time out and explore outside of the UK on a bike. During my selection process, I was looking for a place where... [Read the full story]

Generally, mom likes to give me shirts for Christmas.. but last Christmas she went out of character and got me some cycling kit. CycleOps Fluid 2 Turbo Trainer Review

CycleOps Fluid 2 Turbo Trainer Review

Training outside in the winter stinks. It’s cold, dark, windy, and cars don’t see you until they are too close for comfort. This leaves you with either the option of doing other sports, or training indoors in spinning class or on a turbo trainer. Turbos have come a long way from when they were just simple...
